Hello, moon mamas: welcome to our newest series where we sit down together and talk ingredients. These newsletters will break down the ingredients used in our treats and explain how they help support you during your cycle. We’re big believers that food is medicine and love coming together to educate one another; it helps us feel empowered to make the best choice for our bodies (and soul) and we hope it empowers you, too.

Summer comes and we happily step into another cycle, one that’s filled with outdoor adventures, late afternoon naps, days spent in the sun and nights spent on the porch with our favorite people. With summer solstice comes a shift in our physical bodies as well as our emotional bodies and we find ourselves being called towards eating colder, more refreshing foods — foods in season such as berries, citrus and even more leafy greens.

Raspberries show up during the summer and make most meals a tad bit more elevated. Salads now don these pinkish red berries, jams make a debut and desserts get an upgrade. Besides being totally delicious, raspberries are big cycle supporters and can help replenish nutrients that are lost in our blood. Studies have shown that, “a higher bioavailability of the dietary iron can be achieved by increasing the content of food components enhancing iron absorption” (1)  such as ascorbic acid aka Vitamin C. Raspberries are high in vitamin C and therefore help your body absorb nonheme iron (iron from plant-based foods) when eaten alongside food high in iron. This is a reason to cheer when we’re losing anywhere from four tablespoons to one cup of blood every month.

Beyond helping with iron absorption, raspberries are high in fiber and B vitamins, which comes in hand during our Luteal phase to help stave off sugar cravings and support your liver and large intestine to optimally flush estrogen through the bowel.

If raspberries aren’t your jam (pun intended), kiwi, pineapple, mangoes, strawberries, cauliflower and green peppers are also high in vitamin C and can help support your body during your period. Time to replenish.

If you’re feeling those summer vibes and want a cookie that feels like a picnic under the sun AND can help support your body during menstruation, meet our Raspberry Thumbprint cookie. She may just be your next summer fling.

We’re talking to you.
